She spent the next 13 ½ years working for her friend. She recalls that it was
a challenging and personally rewarding experience. Her comment on that time in
her life is, "After all, how often do we have the opportunity to help someone
we care about in a way that truly makes a difference in their lives?"
She spent a
year as the children’s pastor at her church, then worked in the after-school
program for several years. She also worked on staff at the
small private school at the church for 4 years. Because of the size of the
school, they had multi-graded classrooms, which meant that she would have
students for 2-3 years in a row. This afforded the opportunity to really get
to know them and their struggles. She became aware of the difficulty that many
of her students had with reading, writing and spelling. Despite the success
they would have in other academic areas, she noticed they often faltered when
faced with any task that required reading or writing.
After
significant amounts of research she realized the struggle many of them had was
dyslexia, a language processing disorder. During her final year at the school,
she tutored several of the students she had taught in the classroom and found
that the impact was much greater in an hour of tutoring a week than in 5 hours
a day of classroom instruction. That gave her the push to begin a private
practice as a dyslexia tutor in 2005.
When she reached her capacity as a private tutor, she committed to training
others to work with her to meet the challenge of teaching these bright,
curious and gifted people to read fluently. In 2008 she opened The Learning
Solution and has grown in that time to having trained 5 tutors that are on her
staff, one of whom has already become certified (the gold standard for
proficiency in this field).
The Learning
Solution is unique because they only tutor individuals (children, teens and
adults) who demonstrate the classic warning signs of dyslexia. She uses only
research-based, best practices for teaching reading, spelling and basic
writing for dyslexics. Currently they are the only clinic offering these
services in the southwest Florida area.
Developmental dyslexia is characterized by a
difficulty in
reading, spelling and basic writing,
typically first showing up in children at about the 3rd grade level, who otherwise possess the intelligence and motivation considered
necessary for accurate and fluent reading. It represents one of the most
common problems affecting children and adults. In the United States, the
prevalence of dyslexia is estimated to range from five to 17 percent of
school-aged children, with as many as 40 percent of the entire population
reading below grade level, so Laurie feels she has her work cut out for her.
The Learning Solution is structured to insure they provide the highest
level of expertise possible for every client. Laurie feels she does not have
the option of failure, and does her best to make sure every child, teen or
adult she tutors gets the help they need to learn to live and thrive with
dyslexia.
The Learning Solution of SW
Florida has become an educational support center committed to identifying and
tutoring individuals (from children to adults) with dyslexia, supporting their
families, and is now even consulting educators in public schools on classroom
strategies.
When she is not
working, Laurie lives in a cozy home in North Fort Myers, which has many
tropical fruit trees producing nearly all year long. She attends Covenant
Community Ministries, a church located in east Fort Myers, and serves on the
technical team there, which she says is a bit funny, since she considers
herself to be technically challenged!
She is passionate about helping children, teens and adults achieve their God
given potential and loves working with dyslexic individuals. She maintains
dyslexic people are the most creative and persistent people on the face
of the earth!
