“I hate insurance companies,” is hardly what
you’d expect to hear from a very successful insurance agent. How
about, “This one is a great company. A great company. But it has lousy
policies”, or “The difference in my commissions is negligible, so I
sell the best.” These are no ordinary agents!
Ron and Doreen Pullen, husband and wife agency
owners of Coast to Coast Insurance and Financial Services, which they
founded in Cape Coral in 2001 is no ordinary company. It is independent
by design. Because they are not bound to a single financial institution
or insurer, they can look at products and performance, not names.
“It’s not unusual today to find two funds offering the same
portfolio, but one pays more money. We want our clients in the second
one. We go to a lot of effort to provide good ones. We investigate to be
sure we’re offering the very best.”
It’s a logical, scientific approach, perhaps
because Ron is a well-read process engineer with an easy laugh who got
into insurance and investments nearly 20 years ago and rapidly became
district and sales manager for a major insurer. He has a wall full of
plaques (that Doreen won’t let him display) but left after 17 years
when he became convinced that company was not doing the right thing by
its clients.
Doreen, on the other hand, majored in business
management and then gained an appreciation for detail as she founded,
owned and operated a construction business on Florida’s east coast. An
on the job broken back forced a career change. Diverse backgrounds, but
a common credo when it comes to business: “The clients pay the
agent’s salary. The big companies have forgotten that. So [As
independents] our job is front line service.” “We’re obligated to
follow through all the way.” Or as Doreen so aptly expresses it, “We
don’t sell policies; we sell renewals.”
Between them, Ron and Doreen have 6 children and a
dozen grand children. They live in Cape Coral.
